National Fire Prevention Week is October 4-10

Over 100 years ago, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 burned through the city and beyond, destroying thousands of buildings, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless, and resulted in over 250 deaths. The fire raged for two days, from October 8 through October 10, and caused an estimated $200 million in damages. Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is held every year during the week of October 9 in memory of the Great Chicago Fire. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the week a national observance in 1925, making it the longest-running public health observance in the United States.

The NFPA educates the public about the simple things people can do to prevent fires from happening in their homes or businesses. According to the NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries in the country, which is why the theme for Fire Prevention Week 2020 is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen”. During the week of October 4 through 10, the goal is to ensure people understand the actions they can take in their kitchens to keep themselves, and everyone in the building and community safe. Here’s a few quick facts about cooking fires that prove just how common they are:

  1. 44% of home fires start in the kitchen

  2. One of the most common causes of cooking fires is frying foods

  3. Ranges or cooktops account for 62% of home cooking fires

  4. Unattended equipment is the cause in 31% of reported home cooking fires

  5. 66% of cooking fires start due to the ignition of food or other cooking materials

We understand that knowledge is key to safety and that losses caused by fire can be devastating to any organization. Between your facilities, personal property, and monetary items, many assets are at risk in the event of a fire. To assist your organization in taking steps to prevent such a loss, the NFPA has developed helpful worksheets and interactive teaching materials on reducing the risk of fire at your facility. Regardless of the cause, fires are uncertain and can be catastrophic. However, by taking preventative measures your organization can minimize the risk of facing such a loss.
