Insurance rates industry wide are predicted to rise as the market begins to harden. What can you do to protect your organization from further increases?

Hawley & Associates Answers Your Questions
For Choosing the Right Insurance Broker

Q: Is it important to work with an insurance broker in my own state?

A: Specialty insurance programs are critically important for adoption, foster care, child welfare agencies, social service, religious, non-profit and for profit service organizations. Your local insurance agent may not be experienced or educated in the child welfare or social service fields. You have to be open to looking beyond the borders of your own state to find the insurance brokerage that offers the experience, expertise and market power to evaluate your organization’s insurance needs, place the appropriate policy and represent your interests in the event of a claim.

While Hawley & Associates is located in Washington State, our current client list includes for-profit and non-profit service agencies in 30 states, including many with nationwide programs. We represent over 60 national and international adoption and foster care agencies as clients including some of the oldest and most respected non-profits in the country.

Q: What is your brokerage's experience with large, complex risks and your international capabilities of handling of liability?

A: Hawley & Associates is committed to serving the needs of our clients no matter how large or complex. We serve agencies involved in foster care, which routinely deal with troubled populations that bring a host of challenging risk exposures associated with drug and alcohol counseling, psychiatric care and ongoing medical issues. One adoption agency we service runs a home for birth mothers that requires a portfolio of specialized property, casualty and liability insurance.

Our larger clients face complex international and domestic exposures. Many of our clients and employees travel frequently to dangerous areas of the world with little infrastructure, so they require accident and liability coverage wherever they go. We also provide national and international workers compensation coverage, and we have saved our clients tens of thousands of dollars in this area.

Q: What history does your brokerage have with health and social service agencies?

A: Company principals and staff associates bring decades of career experience serving the needs of health care and social services clients to the table. In just two years, Hawley & Associates has grown to include over 40 national and international adoption and foster care agencies as clients. Our list of clients includes some of the oldest and most respected non-profits in the country such as The Gladney Center, World Association for Children and Parents (WACAP) and Children's House International. We have saved our clients hundreds of thousands of dollars, which they use to fulfill their missions rather than buying insurance coverage. The Hawley family, founders of Hawley & Associates, has a long hand of experience with health and social services organizations. Phillip Hawley has been working as an insurance underwriter and broker for health and social service agencies since 1986. Donna Hawley served as Human Resource Director for Children's Hospital for many years. She now offers HR services and risk management consulting for our clients. Wayne Hawley holds a masters in Clinical Psychology and has acted as a consultant to numerous health and social service agencies as well as the social service divisions of the states of California and Oregon.

Q: What history does the brokerage have in the non-profit arena?

A: Agency principals have over 20 years of risk management expertise with national and international non-profits in areas including health care, child welfare, professional treatment centers, adoption and foster care agencies, and other charitable organizations. Company founder Phillip Hawley began his insurance industry career over two decades ago as an underwriter for the Chubb group, serving large non-profits as well as other industries with complex insurance needs.
